A fuel or lubricating oil susceptible to oxidative deterioration is improved by addition thereto of a minor proportion by weight of a tris-(hydroxyphenyl) propane (as defined below) in which the hydroxyphenyl groups are attached directly by their ortho or para positions to the chain -C-CH-CH, two of the said hydroxyphenyl groups being attached to the said chain by the terminal carbon atom shown with a hydrogen atom attached thereto. A tris-(hydroxyphenyl) propane is defined as any compound in which there is present a straight chain of three carbon atoms to which the hydroxyphenyl groups are attached. The additives may be prepared by condensing three moles of a hydroxyphenyl compound having a free ortho or para position (several of which are specified), with one mole of an alpha beta unsaturated aldehyde having an unsubstituted alpha carbon atom. Aldehydes mentioned are acrolein, crotonaldehyde or cinnamaldehyde in which cases the -C-CH-CH chain mentioned above will be part of a propyl, n-butyl, or propylphenyl group respectively. Fuels mentioned include kerosene and other jet-engine fuels, and lubricants mentioned include natural and synthetic hydrocarbons and esters.
