PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a method and an apparatus for independently controlling the opening and closing of contactors in a modular type contactor device.

SOLUTION: The apparatus includes a contactor device having multiple contactors such that each contactor is separately controlled such that one contactor may be closed without the other contactors being closed. The contactors are so structured that a pair of contactors are closed after a zero-voltage crossing of a power signal. A third contactor is closed after the pair of contactors are closed.
