PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a medium carrying device capable of suppressing abrasion of a gate member and failure such as double-feed. SOLUTION: The medium carrying device has a hopper bed 27 for stacking and housing media, a pickup roller 23 for supplying the media to a medium carrying passage by taking out the media including at least the medium at the uppermost layer among the media stacked and housed in the hopper bed 27, and the gate member 25. Also, the device has a feed roller 24 for separating and carrying only the medium at the uppermost layer among the media taken out with the pickup roller by contacting and cooperating with the gate member, gate member releasing mechanisms 26, 29 for releasing contact between the gate member and the feed roller, and sensors 15, 21, 22, 31 for detecting positions of the media in the hopper bed 27 and the medium carrying passage. When the sensors detect the last sheet of the media on the hopper bed 27, the gate member releasing mechanisms 26, 29 are driven, and a clearance between the gate member and the feed roller is released.
