PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a sheet material discriminating device, capable of correctly discriminating sheet material at high speed, and an image forming device provided with the same. SOLUTION: An impact member 1 is provided to apply impact to the sheet material 4, and a signal generating means 2 is disposed facing the impact member 1, so that the kind of the sheet material 4 is discriminated based on a signal generated in accordance with the size of the impact transmitted through the sheet material 4 to discriminate the kind of the sheet material. When the impact is applied to the sheet material, the sheet material 4 is carried by carrying means 3a and 3b holding the sheet material 4 to rotate, and the impact is applied to the sheet material 4 by the impact member 1 synchronously with rotation of the carrying means 3a and 3b.
