PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To increase the resolution of gray scale in display in a display device using an optical shutter system. SOLUTION: An image is formed by applying an electric field, which is formed by a first electric field forming means 41 for forming an electric field directed toward a specified direction in an electric field forming means 40, and a second electric field forming means 42 for forming the electric field directed toward a direction crossed to the specified direction in the electric field forming means 40, to flat-shaped particles 35 dispersed in a transparent liquid 30 stored between a transparent substrate 10 disposed on the display side ( arrow V1 side in Figure) and a counter substrate 20 placed opposite to the transparent substrate 10, and by changing inclination of the flat particles 35 for evry region R (regions R1, R2,...) with action of the electric field.
