An aligning agent for liquid crystals which is for use in obtaining polyimide-based liquid-crystal alignment films which are for use in various display elements employing a nematic liquid crystal, have an excellent voltage retention, and are reduced in charge accumulation and excellent in liquid-crystal-aligning properties and resistance to rubbing; and a liquid-crystal display element produced with the aligning agent. The aligning agent for liquid crystals, when applied to form a coating film and then rubbed, gives an alignment film for nematic liquid crystals. It comprises at least one polymer selected between a polyamic acid obtained by reacting one or more tetracarboxylic dianhydrides with one or more diamines comprising a diamine having a structure represented by the following formula (I) and a polyimide obtained by causing the polyamic acid to undergo dehydrating cyclization. The liquid-crystal display element is obtained by applying this aligning agent to a pair of substrates each having an electrode to form coating films, rubbing the coating films to form liquid-crystal alignment films, and sandwiching a nematic liquid crystal between the liquid-crystal alignment films respectively formed on the two substrates.
