PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To disclose a variable capacity rotary compressor which can minimize rotational resistance by making the pressure in a compression chamber which carries out empty rotation equal to the discharge pressure. SOLUTION: The variable capacity rotary compressor comprises an airtight container, a housing installed in the airtight container so as to define a first compression chamber and a second compression chamber which have volumes different from each other therein, and compression units which are respectively installed in the first and second compression chambers. In the variable capacity rotary compressor, in response to a change in direction of rotation of a rotary shaft for driving the compression units, compression operation is performed in either of the first and second compression chambers. The variable capacity rotary compressor includes an intake flow passage switch device which switches an intake flow passage of a refrigerant so that the refrigerant may be introduced to an inlet port of either first or second compression chamber which performs the compression operation, a high-pressure pipe which connects the discharge side of the compressor and the intake flow passage change device to each other, and a high pressure flow passage switch device which is arranged in the intake flow passage switch device and which is made to communicate with an inlet port of either first and second compression chamber which performs empty rotation in response to the flow passage switching operation of the intake flow passage switch device.
