The flexible press mantle (6), at a press roller (5) with a controlled bending action against a counter roller (4) and a press unit (7), applies pressure to a moving wet web (1) e.g. of paper or cardboard together with press blankets (2,3) to extract water. At least one section of the mantle has a different diameter at the press zone from the diameter at the roller ends, with an increased or decreased diameter at the roller center.
