PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide an image processing method, an image processor and an image forming apparatus to classify a character area and a pattern area with high precision, a program, and a recording medium. SOLUTION: The image processor comprises: a section 201 for detecting a background pixel from input image data; a background pixel counting section 202 for counting the number of background pixels in units of block consisting of a plurality of pixels; a section 203 for classifying a plurality of blocks into background blocks and non-background blocks based on the number of background pixels of a remarked block and classifying the background blocks into character area blocks and background area blocks based on the number of background pixels of a neighboring block; and a classification altering section 204 for classifying the non-background blocks into character area blocks and pattern area blocks based on the classification results of neighboring blocks. Consequently, the character area is detected with the space between characters, and erroneous detection of the character area is reduced as compared with conventional character area detection with on edge information.
