PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a method for producing an acyloxybenzenesulfonic acid having an excellent hue and no problem of smell or its salt. SOLUTION: In the method for producing an acyloxybenzenesulfonic acid or its salt represented by general formula (4) (R1is a 1-18C alkyl group or an alkenyl group; M is a hydrogen atom or a cationic group; a is valence of M; n is 0-2) by reacting a hydroxybenzenesulfonic acid or its salt represented by general formula (1) with a lower carboxylic acid anhydride and a carboxylic acid, the reaction is carried out under reduced pressure at 80-190°C while distilling away a low-boiling component produced by the reaction from the reaction system.
