The present invention provides a bed-top scale for humans, that is a system for weighing the body weight of patients lying in a horizontal position, whi ch comprises a stretcher (1, 2), a strap (9, 10) for suspending the stretcher ( 1, 2) and a means (35) of weighing. Such weighing means may be a weighing beam (3) that has support members (28). The weighing beam and the support members are positioned astride, over the patient, and the members, on either side of the patient's torso and the stretcher (1, 2), are supported on the surface o n which the patient is lying (e.g. mattress). The stretcher (1, 2) is position ed under the patient, and weighing is effected by suspending the stretcher with the patient from the weighing beam (3).
