PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To improve the fuel consumption in a response-sensitive mode of the characteristic with a priority given to the responsiveness of an internal combustion engine. SOLUTION: A first variable valve mechanism capable of increasing/decreasing the lift/operation angle and a second variable valve mechanism capable of delaying/advancing the center angle of the working angle are provided on an intake valve side, and an exhaust valve side variable valve mechanism capable of delaying/advancing the opening/closing timing is provided on an exhaust valve side. The intake is controlled by the opening control and the intake valve opening/closing timing control of an electronic control throttle valve. The control mode includes the fuel consumption-sensitive mode and the response-sensitive mode. In the response-sensitive mode, the lift/operation angle is mainly changed to the load change, and the intake is adjusted by the intake valve closing timing IVC. In this condition, the exhaust valve closing timing EVC is largely delayed, and the internal EGR is increased. COPYRIGHT: (C)2005,JPO&NCIPI
