Product for preventing or treating Alzheimer's disease comprising sphingomyelin and/or an activator of endogenous sphingomyelin synthesis and/or an inhibitor of endogenous sphingomyelin degradation, is new. ACTIVITY : Nootropic; Neuroprotective. No biological data given. MECHANISM OF ACTION : Inhibitor of Abeta peptide formation; Activator of endogenous sphingomyelin synthesis; Inhibitor of endogenous sphingomyelin degradation. Incubating SPA4CT-transfected mouse neurons with sphingomyelin (10-100 MicroM) reduced Abeta peptide levels by 20-50 %.
