A combustion turbine engine includes an outer housing with wall which defines an inlet, an outlet and an inner surface. An insulation cartridge 90 is disposed within the outer housing 80 and defines an inner space. The insulation cartridge 90 includes a wall (195,200 in fig. 4) and a core 210 and is operable to at least thermally insulate the outer housing from the flow of high temperature gas. A turbine rotor 60 is disposed within the inner space and is rotatable in response to the flow of high temperature gas. In another aspect, a turbine with an insulation cartridge is incorporated into a microturbine engine system with a recuperator and generator.
