A microturbine engine comprises a turbine 35 and compressor 45 including respective housings with a turbine 57 and compressor 56 rotors coupled by a tie rod arrangement and cantilever mounted in first 110 and 215 second high-speed bearings. A generator 20 having a housing 120 and rotor is supported for low-speed rotation by low-speed bearings. The engine also includes a planetary reduction gearbox 60 having a housing 140 connected to the turbine and generator housings, a pinion gear 160, and a low-speed ring gear 135 connected to the generator rotor and at least partially supported by the low-speed bearings. A quill shaft 175 is connected through shear bolts to the turbine rotor via a flexible diaphragm within a catcher such that the pinion and high speed bearings support the turbine rotor and the shaft for high-speed rotation. Minimises vibration and the number of high speed bearings.
