In a method and apparatus for controlling a position of a screen pointer of an electronic device, a touchpad (4, fig 1) has a touch sensitive surface generating position signals of a pointing object (such as a finger) and a controller (18, fig 2) generating movement data from the position signals, and further movement data from the position signals when the pointing object is removed from contact with the surface. The further movement data may move at a constant speed, accelerate, or increment with gradually decreasing magnitudes such as an exponential decay to simulate friction, inertia and momentum on a flicked mouse ball, or with a user defined velocity profile. Control by the pointing object in regained when it touches the screen again (step 72, fig 5). An inertial is of particular benefit when a touchpad needs to be repeated swiped to traverse a large screen. |
