The present invention provides a surface emitting device having high brightness, excellent brightness uniformity, and high directivity. A surface emitting device 100 includes a light guiding plate 2, a light source 3, and a prism sheet 31. The light guiding plate 2 is provided with prism portions 4 each having a slight inclined plane 4a and a steep inclined plane 4b arranged closer to one edge 2a than the slight inclined plane 4a. A plurality of light refracting portions 34 each having a refractive surface 34a and a reflective surface 34b are provided on an incident surface 33 of the prism sheet 31. Light introduced into the light guiding plate 2 from the light source 3 is emitted from the slight inclined plane 4a and is then incident on the light refracting portion 34.
