An overvoltage protective circuit comprises a non-linear resistance 13 in series with a 4- layer diode which conducts when the voltage across a supply 10, 11 exceeds a determined value, thus charging a capacitor 23 to above the normal supply voltage. The diode is blocked by capacitor reverse current when the supply voltage falls. A diode 24 prevents damage to the 4 layer diode from reverse voltages. In another arrangement (Fig. 1, not shown), a silicon controlled rectifier replaces the diode 30.
