The invention provides a gumming medium for the treatment of printing plat es comprising a buffer solution, a water-soluble polymer, a surfactant, and, optionally, a polyhydroxy compound. The invention further provides a printing process utilizing the medium, and a process utilizing the medium as a pretreatment composition for the temporary protection of fresh printing plates from soiling and from the influence of external factors.
