The retarder has a thermal switch (200) connected between two terminals of electromagnetic coils (102, 103) of an inductor (101) to successively connect the electromagnetic coils in series or parallel. The switch connects the coils of the retarder in parallel to decouple a braking torque of the retarder during a deceleration time. The switch connects the coils in series during another deceleration time. An independent claim is also included for a usage of retarder in a combined retarder comprising a primary retarder and an electromagnetic retarder.
