PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To reduce the amount of memory required for setting image parameters in order to perform image processing of image data using the image data on one page of a document when opposite sides of the document are read out. SOLUTION: The image scanner comprises a CCD image sensor 78 for reading out one side of a document being carried, and a CIS 50 for reading out the other side of the document. Even if double-sided reading and monochrome reading are selected, the document is carried while being reversed and the images on the opposite sides of the document are read out sequentially when an entire surface ground removing mode for removing the ground of the document using image parameters based on the image data on one page of the document is selected. When a forward end ground removing mode for removing the ground of the document using image parameters for the image data at the forward end part of the document is selected, images on both the sides of the document are read out at a time without reversing the document.
