An aromatic extract of a catalytic cycle stock, which may have been hydrofined, having a boiling range of 600-1100 DEG F., is heat treated at 500-1100 DEG F. and at a pressure of 0-1000 p.s.i.g. for a period of 0.5-72 hours. Thereafter that portion boiling at 600-1100 DEG F. is recovered and may be used as a moderator coolant in nuclear reactors.
