The device has a gear drive to drive two axles. Two sensors (19, 20) measure rotation frequency of one axle and rotation speed of a rear wheel of a bicycle, respectively. A control unit (22) calculates gear transmission ratio based on the outputs of the sensors and compares the ratio with the pre-stored index values to calculate the gear stage. The control unit outputs the gear stage and the actual gear in operation to a display (24).
