The device (1) is designed as a frame (2) holding a cushion (3) and a row of coils or magnetic elements (4) for the creation of magnetic or electric fields. The cushion (3) is filled with a fluid increasing in viscosity under the influence of magnetic or electric fields and exceeds the frame (2) at the top. The work-piece (5) is positioned on top of the soft cushion (3), its shape forming depressions into the material. When the coils or magnets (4) are activated the viscosity of the fluid is increased and the work-piece (5) held by the complementary shaped cushion (3).
