<P>PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To efficiently set a read mode when an original is read. <P>SOLUTION: Two kinds of the reading modes as a platen mode and an ADF mode can be set to the image forming apparatus 10. When the ADF mode is set as a default mode, the platen read mode is set for a period from a timing when an ADF 20 is opened until the ADF 20 is closed in a state that an original is removed from a platen glass 32 and the read mode is maintained even at the reception of a reset instruction.
