<P>PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a simple and new method for preferably stereoselectively producing biphenyl by reacting an aromatic compound having a substituent or substituents to oxidatively dimerize. <P>SOLUTION: The biphenyl is produced by reacting the aromatic compound having a substituent or substituents to oxidatively dimerize by using a catalyst containing a rhodium compound, preferably the rhodium compound and a copper compound in an atmosphere containing molecular oxygen.
