PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a soft decision decoder and a soft decision decoding method, capable of enhancing the bit-error rate characteristics of a reproduction signal. SOLUTION: A sampling generating section 102 samples a symbol of a received multiphase phase modulation signal. A phase detection section 104 detects the phaseψof the received symbol. A phase selection section 106 discriminates a known symbol, corresponding to the received symbol on the basis of the phaseψ. A bit weighting section 110 decides a weighting coefficient k(n) by each bit of the known symbol, on the basis of the phaseψand by using the characteristics of a gray code. A soft decision bit data generating section 112 generates soft decision bit data data(n), on the basis of a bit stream str(n) of the known symbol and the weighting coefficient k(n) by each bit of the known symbol.
