PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To read a manuscript in a split manner without changing the direction of the manuscript, when reading in a split manner the manuscript of the size of a manuscript side or more that can be read. SOLUTION: An image scanner 10 comprises a plate glass 2 provided with translucency mounting the manuscript, a read carriage for reading the image of a book manuscript D mounted on the platen glass, and a pressure plate 3 for covering the book manuscript, mounted on the platen glass by openably providing the platen glass on a scanner body 10a, by a plurality of hinges 4. The hinges are arranged out of a region of the platen glass, and the image scanner is provided with a gap S2 for inserting the book manuscript in between the pressure plate opening the platen glass and the scanner body.
