PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a paper feeder allowing easy addition of a document even in a paper feeding state. SOLUTION: In this paper feeder, when the document is set on a lift plate, the lift plate rises to provide the paper feeding state. When all documents set on the lift plate are fed out, the lift plate lowers to provide a standby state. The paper feeder comprises a reflection type sensor for detecting presence or absence of a document set on the lift plate, a light reflecting means for returning light from a light emitting element of the reflection type sensor to a light receiving element, a lever for inserting or removing the light reflecting means from an optical path line of the reflection type sensor, and an elastic body for holding the light reflecting means at a removal position. When a document is added, the lever is pressed by the added document, and the light reflecting means disposed at one end of the lever comes onto the optical path line of the reflection type sensor.
