PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a shift operation apparatus for a small outboard motor which is built in the outboard motor. SOLUTION: A shift operation apparatus for an outboard motor comprises a Hall IC 120 for detecting the motor speed to detect the speed of a motor 30, an output arm 56 connected to an operation unit of a shift mechanism 100 for the outboard motor with a base end portion thereof mounted on an output shaft 40 on an outer part of a case and a leading tip portion thereof moved in a rocking manner in a range from the shift forward position F to the shift reverse position R with a neutral position being a boundary, and a control circuit 80 which calculates the positional deviation between the shift position of the output arm 56 calculated by the signal from the Hall IC 120 for detecting the motor speed and the lever position of an operation lever 111 to be obtained from the lever position signal of the operation lever 111, and controls the rotation of the motor 30 based on the positional deviation.
