PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To optimize a projection image by detecting outside light reflected on the entire projection image regardless of a screen size and a projection distance. SOLUTION: A micromirror composing a DLP element 4 is driven according to an image signal and takes a position where illuminating light is reflected towards a projection lens 6 and a position where it is reflected sideways as unnecessary light. A shutter 8 and a light detector 7 are disposed on the unnecessary light side. To detect outside light on a screen, a lamp 1 is turned off, and a black image is displaced so that light emitted from the DLP element 4 gathers on the unnecessary light side. As a result, only outside light passed through the projection lens 6 enters the DLP element 4. Since the range of an image projected on the screen 9 at the time has been set by the zooming and focusing of the projection lens 6, outside light reflected on the screen 9 is turned to an image on the DLP element 4 as it is.
