PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a black coloring material for a black matrix, the coloring material having improved dispersibility and packing property in a vehicle and light shielding property and resulting a black matrix having high optical density, to provide a coloring composition for a black matrix containing the above black coloring material for a black matrix, and to provide a color filter containing a coating film product obtained from the above coloring composition for the black matrix.

SOLUTION: The black coloring material for a black matrix comprises black composite particle powder in which at least a part of the particle surface of carbon product particle powder is coated with a surface treating agent and a carbon component is present on the surface of the coating and/or the particles.
