PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a horizontal axis wind mill and its control method for adjusting control form automatically to reduce load acting on a driving device while realizing proper pitch control. SOLUTION: This horizontal axis wind mill 1 for controllng pitch of a blade to converge rotation speed of a rotor 4 into predetermined target rotation speed is provided with a means for setting reference rotation speed different from the target rotation speed, a means for measuring a period of time when rotation speed of the rotor 4 exceeds the reference rotation speed (excess time) in specific period of time and calculating a rate of excess time for the specific time (reference excess rate), and a means for controlling amount of driving of the driving device for controlling pitch so that the reference excess rate is included in a specific scope. This control method for the horizontal axis wind mill 1 comprises a process (S2) for setting the reference rotation speed, a process (S5) for calculating the reference excess rate, and a process for controlling amount of driving of the driving device so that the reference excess rate is included in the specific scope (S6 to S7a).
