PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide an image reading apparatus which can read an image while enlarging the image to the number of pixels or more capable of processing at a reading period of a line unit by utilizing a line memory without sacrificing a reading speed at an equal size, and to provide a method of enlarging and reading the image. SOLUTION: The method of enlarging and reading the image includes a step of making the moving speed of a line sensor 36 in the direction of sub scanning direction of the reading position of the line sensor 36 so that the resolution of the direction of the sub scanning to become twice as large as the normal; a step of contracting the image of the two line parts read by the line sensor 36 to one line by the sub scanning contracting unit 104; and a step of enlarging the image after the contraction in the main scanning direction by a main scanning enlarging unit 105.
