PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a skew detection method and a skew correction method which can appropriately obtain the skew of a document even if it is difficult to do so only by automatic processing. SOLUTION: A document image is subjected to the extraction of document elements of a character string, a ruled line, a photograph and the like by a document element extraction means 102. A feature variable calculation means 103, concerning each of the extracted document elements, calculates the skew and the reliability thereof. A skew calculation means 104, based on the calculated feature variable, calculates the entire skew of the image. An image correction means 107 corrects the image using the calculated skew, setting the image in the correct direction, and the corrected image is presented to a user by a corrected image presentation means 108. A document element presentation means 105 presents, to the user, the document elements sequentially on the corrected image. A propriety instruction reception means 106 receives information on the propriety of adoption from the user.
