PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide an apparatus and method for surely controlling print permission without the need for using new control information or a new protection method. SOLUTION: The apparatus disclosed herein detects copy control information attached to digital information such as "copy available", "one generation copy available", "second copy is inhibited", and "copy is inhibited" when controlling the printing of digital information, and carries out control as to whether or not the digital information is printed without using exclusive control information or an exclusive system on the basis of the detected copy control information. The apparatus outputs information with respect to success/failure of printing to enable a user to cope with the state of failed print and operability is improved. COPYRIGHT: (C)2005,JPO&NCIPI
