PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a base paper for release paper, used for release paper for adhesive labels, having strong paper stiffness, little occurrence of paper powder and a recycle property and having light transmissivity, particularly free from problem concerning a position detection performance in a photoelectric tube. SOLUTION: The base paper for release paper consists mainly of a chemical pulp having≥100 and≤350 ml Cannadian standard freeness and comprises≥1 wt.% and≤20 wt.% (based on paper weight) resin composition. The resin composition comprises an acrylic resin and a water-soluble polymer as main components and an acrylic resin having≥20°C and≤100°C glass transition temperature is used as the acrylic resin and at least one kind of water-soluble polymer selected from polyvinyl alcohol and starch is used as the water-soluble polymer and the formulation ratio of the acrylic resin/the water-soluble polymer is (90/10) to (50/50) and the base paper for release paper has≥0.85 g/cm<SP>3</SP>and≤1.25 g/cm<SP>3</SP>density.
