<P>PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To improve detection precision of a moving speed of a belt used for forming images. <P>SOLUTION: The image forming apparatus rotates an intermediate transfer belt 10 used for forming images with a drive means, and detects a scale 70 for detecting the moving speed of the intermediate transfer belt 10 provided on the intermediate transfer belt 10 with an optical sensor 71. The structure is such that the intermediate transfer belt 10, in the neighborhood of a detection region A of the scale 70 on the intermediate transfer belt 10 by the optical sensor 71, is depressed by a position-fixing member 72.
