PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To make proper AF control to be performed without depending on a zoom magnification. SOLUTION: This imaging apparatus has; an imaging device 106 which performs the photoelectric conversion of an image of an object, which is formed by a photographic system including a focusing lens 105; a signal processing means 108 which generates a picture signal based on the output signal of the imaging device and which is equipped with an electronic zooming function which processes a part of the picture signal electrically and generates a magnified output picture; a distance detecting means 126 for detecting a distance to the object; and a focus control means 114 which generates a control signal for controlling the drive of the focusing lens respectively with a 1st control method based on the output signal of the imaging device and a 2nd control method based on the output signal of the distance detecting means. The focus control means uses the 1st and 2nd methods together in a 1st zooming state which includes at least a non-use state of the electronic zooming function and uses only the 2nd control method in a 2nd zooming state in which the electronic zooming function is used and which has a zoom magnification larger than that in the 1st zooming state.
