PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a focus detector capable of easily and exactly detecting a focus position in the wide area of a subject without spoiling the interchangeability of a lens. SOLUTION: The focus detector is equipped with: an image re-forming lens (103) for forming again an image of an image formed by a photographic lens (201); a shutter means (102) for making beams passing at least two nonidentical areas of the image re-forming lens selectively pass through; an imaging means (104) for receiving two beams passing the shutter means in a time-division manner; and a focus state detection means (108) for detecting the focus state of the photographic lens on the basis of the two beams received by the imaging means.
