PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a control method and device of a storage device having optimum performance in speed and accuracy. SOLUTION: The control method and control device 51 are used for a variable capacity storage device 1. The storage device 1 has a first conveyor 5 of an endless circumferential belt shape including a conveying passage part 8 and a return passage part 11 that have a complementarily varying length and first and second operating devices 37 and 38. The conveying passage part 8 is connected to a second conveyer 39 in an inlet station 3 and to a third conveyer 41 in an outlet station 4. The first operating device 37 is independently controlled according to a function of the state of the second conveyor 39, and the second operating device 38 is controlled according to a function of the state of the third conveyer 41 and a function of the state of the first operating device 37. The state of the first operating device 37, the state of the second operating device 38, and the state of the third conveyer 41 are determined by respective encoders 47, 48 and 50.
