<p><P>PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a data processor and an image forming apparatus which can protect even existing data when a data protection function is added. <P>SOLUTION: The power source of an image forming apparatus is switched on (S11), and when system check is completed (S12), whether or not a security kit for executing processing related with the protection of data is mounted or whether or not the mounted security kit has been started is decided (S16, S17). When it is decided that the security kit is mounted, and that the security kit has not been started (S16:NO, S17: YES), a confirmation screen for confirming the encryption of filing data is displayed (S18), and when the execution of encryption is designated (S19: YES), the encryption is started (S21).
