PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To produce a highly reliable magnetic tape medium which is excellent in electromagnetic conversion characteristics, archive characteristics, traveling durability and storage durability by forming a film of a magnetic layer by means of a vapor deposition device for manufacturing usual magnetic tapes. SOLUTION: A film is formed on a long sheet substrate 1 comprising a polymer film by means of a vacuum vapor deposition process by using an iron-cobalt alloy as a vapor deposition source, and a magnetic layer 2 is formed, which comprises a thin film whose main component is a cobalt-containing maghemite which contains cobalt of 2-20 wt.%.
