PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide an endoscope system which can select a wavelength band of exciting light, further, prevent the exciting light as stray light from being mixed into fluorescent light incident into a photographing unit no matter which wavelength band is selected, in generating a normal image and a special image based on a fluorescent light image by shooting out illumination light and the exciting light from the distal end of an endoscope. SOLUTION: An exciting light eliminating filter 182 for eliminating the light having the same wavelength band as that of the exciting light is assembled and further, a short-circuiting portion 184 for short-circuiting a pair of three electrode plates 191 to 193 in the distal end of the inserting portion 10a is provided in a cap 18 removably mounted on the distal end of an inserting portion 10a of an electronic endoscope 10. A distal end detecting portion 23 identifies the cap 18 based on the pair of short-circuited electrode plates, and controls a first and a second light source portions 25, 31 such that the exciting light having the same wavelength band as that of the light eliminated with exciting light eliminating filter of the cap 18 is introduced into a light guide 15.
