The system has a double free wheel (1) operating in both adjustment directions and including clamping rolls (6). The wheel permits displacement of a camshaft only in a direction of rotation of the wheel, and stops its rotation in the opposite direction. The wheel is driven using a hydraulic motor. The rolls are jammed between an interior of a drive wheel (3) and an exterior of a star clamp (4) in a closed position.
