<p><P>PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a small-sized illuminator long in the servuce life of a light source and small in power consumption, and capable of sufficiently emitting bright light rays. <P>SOLUTION: The illuminator is equipped with a surface-emitting LED 101 for emitting illumination light, a radiator 102 for efficiently radiating heat generated by the surface-emitting LED 101, an LED driver 103 for driving the surface-emitting LED 101, a collector lens 104 positioned on the optical path of the illumination light emitted from the surface-emitting LED 101, and an aperture diaphragm 105 situated between the collector lens 104 and a specimen 106.
