PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a test apparatus and a test method, capable of grasping the state of gases discharged from a material for a socket to be attached to a discharge lamp valve body, determining as to whether the material can be used for the socket, and determining the characteristics/performance of the material to be incorporated in the design of a lamp body, in a short time. SOLUTION: A test piece 4, to which a thermocouple 3 has been attached, is heated in a decompressed vacuum chamber 1 to discharge gases, while the temperature is controlled. While monitoring the amount of discharge of the gases by means of a gas sensor 9, a film of particulates contained in the discharged gases is formed on the surface of a glass slide 8. The data on the amount of discharge of the gases, the amount of film deposition, etc. acquired by such an acceleration test is corrected by an acceleration factor to infer the characteristics and performance in actual usage environment.
