PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To prevent excessive stress from acting on a gear mechanism connecting a starter motor and an engine at a time of cranking. SOLUTION: In an idling stop control performing automatic start and automatic stop of an engine, engine cranking is started as it is when stop conditions are established at time t1 and engine fuel is cut and start conditions are established during the engine rotation in a drive direction by inertia (time t2), and engine cranking is started with waiting for elimination of reverse direction rotation when a piston can not get over a compression stroke and is returned just before engine stop and the start conditions are established while the engine is rotating in the reverse direction. Consequently, the engine can be quickly started and excess stress id prevented from acting on the gear mechanism connecting the starter motor and the engine. COPYRIGHT: (C)2005,JPO&NCIPI
