<P>PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To use an amount of light based on a use condition by allowing the alteration of amounts of light incident on light modulation elements. <P>SOLUTION: The image display device includes a light source 5 which has a light emitting part 7a, a reflector 4 which reflects light emitted from the light emitting part of the light source and leads the light to a specific direction, the light modulation elements 19R, 19G, and 19B which modulate light reflected by the reflector, and a position altering means 24 which alters the relative position of the light source and reflector in the axial direction.
