<P>PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To purify HC in a particulate filter. <P>SOLUTION: The filter traps particulates in exhaust gas exhausted from an internal combustion engine and comprises a plurality of cells 21, 22 divided by partition walls 3m made of porous material, with passage cross-sectional areas approximately equal to each other. Predetermined cells 21 are sealed on one end part side while the other cells 22 are sealed on the other end part side. A catalyst having oxidation capability is supported on the partition walls. Partition walls 3s for dividing cells 22 are added into the cell 22 which the exhaust gas passed through the partition walls flows into.
